"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." Audre Lorde.
This post is dedicated to all those who labor to ensure #BlackLivesMatter.
What a week it's been huh? With all the media focus on the riots in America, it may be hard to keep your head up. Don't worry, I understand. Sometimes it's easier to wallow in self-doubt and anger, and rightfully so.
As many of my long time readers may know by now, my blog is very much inspired by the philosophy that black lives do matter. I write mainly from the perspective of a young, African woman abroad but in many ways my core motivation is to re-write our story. We're emerging, rising, sophisticated, educated, ambitious, globally-minded and woke. Feel free to read this part of my blog for more.
So this here, is a celebration of life - its paradoxes in the present moment and its persistent hopes in the future:
"With every morning that you choose to take on a new day, you remove a grain of salt from your wound." Shirazein.
"What I liked about her, is that she didn't let the negativity destroy her aura. She shone even harder. She was immune to their poison." ~ Iambrillyant.
"Some doors don't open for you - because they aren't meant for you. Focus less on the why's and focus more on how you're going to keep going then keep growing into the better version of 'you.' Spend your energy trying to figure out how to make your goals a reality. Don't take L's to the heart. Not every missed opportunity should be considered a loss." Reyna Biddy
"Black women were created of brown sugar and warm honey. The sweetest thing to bless the earth. Be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise." Alex Elle.
"Believe in all the things inside you. All the moons, all the suns, all the winds and all the fires. They all move when you move. Everything unfolds and shifts. With the rise of your chest." RmDrake
"Forgive them. Not because they asked for your forgiveness or because they deserve it. Or because the pain they caused you is not worth it. But because you cannot truly move on without forgiving. Your forgiveness speaks of you not them." ~ Najwa Bezain.
"Today I choose to be happy. I choose to let go. I choose to be myself. To love myself. To cherish myself. Today, I choose to be free. I choose to embrace my time. For all that is timeless, is precious. All that is precious, is unique. All that is unique, is different. And all that is different, is beautiful. Today I choose to be beautiful." ~ Najwa Bezain.
